In Church, acclaimed playwright Young Jean Lee transforms the theatre into the site of an exuberant spiritual service for religious and non-religious individuals alike. A charismatic preacher and three female reverends take you on a journey that is by turns funny, musical, jarring, and ultimately moving. Never content with simple parody, Lee's ambitious aim with Church is to give her audience an authentic experience of theatrical faith.

Once upon a time, there was a young man who worried about a great many things. He worried about money. He worried having too much to do and not enough time. He worried about his health. He worried about his future. He worried about saying the wrong thing. He worried about being a hypocrite. He woke up in the morning and his brain swam around in a fishbowl of worry until he fell asleep at  night. And the Lord said to him, "My child, open your eyes! Your world is as small as a speck of sand." And the young man replied, "I am complicated, I am deep. I am a good person. I am sufficient."

(Pause.)

This is you.

In their citation from the 2010 American Academy of Arts and Letters Literature Awards, the Academy members wrote:

"Young Jean Lee's plays are fierce, challenging, brazenly theatrical, and then transcendentally lyrical. Her wit is both biting and hilarious. Her subjects big, bold, and daring, but truthful and humane. In seven years, as author and director, she has created a theater like none other, and with it, a fresh dramatic language for the multi-cultural American stage."
